Philippe Wambergue. Very interesting character.
I wouldn't know much about French Championship in late 1970s or early 1980s. In early 1980s he appeared on selected WRC events with groupB Citroen Visa, mostly 1000 Pistes. The car was never meant for top overall results. His best result however was 9th in Rally Acropolis 1983 with a FWD(!) Visa Chrono.
In 1984 he had a guest start with the Mazda works team and the groupB Wankel RX7. It was RAC 1984 with I belive "CJR 130" which was very much a guest car (team boss Warmbold in Acropolis 84, Duez in Spa 85, Millen RAC 85). It was also not the fastest or most reliable car, Philippe Wambergue accordingly retired on RAC.
Then he was Citroen works driver in the BX 4TC alongside Jean-Claude Andruet. In 1986 he did:
Monte with "9829 NR 92", N°17, retired suspension
Sweden with "9829 NR 92" again, N°11, retired oil piupe frozen (engine)
Acropolis with "9817 NR 92" (Andruet's Monte car), N°17, retired suspension
If I am not completely wrong, Phil Wambergue owns both the BX works cars he drove still today!
Thereafter Philippe Wambergue did not get any further chances at WRC level, but he joined the Peugeot and Citroen raid teams and finished 8th on Dakar 1989 in the Peugeot 205 T16 and 2nd on the Dakar 1996 in the Citroen ZX.
