Have you noticed if the radiator fan turns on just before the gauge starts going down?

 

Does it rise quickly from cold or is it under specific circumstances, like heavy traffic, going up a hill and so forth?

 

 

By the way, what kind of engine are we talking about? Model year? Mileage?

my car is peugeot 307 sw model 2006- I had the heater radiator changed last summer. Yet, the case of high temperature recurred and it happens frequently without any reason. it moves from average to red in a few seconds preceded by radiator fan movement. when it reaches the max I have this notice 'engine temperature too high' and the signal STOP on for almost 10 seconds and then it comes back to average. By the way, I don't stop the car when this happens because it seems a fake alarm.

It looks like you have a temperature sensor malfunction. It's located on the side of the head, between the head and the battery, in back of the thermostat housing. It's kept in place by some kind of a clip. Easy to remove and surprisingly almost no antifreeze comes out.

 

Why don't you try and check that first?

 

Then you could try the sensor connector and its wiring.

 

Is your car equipped with a one-speed radiator fan or a two-speed one?

 

 

(My reference is a 2007, 2.0 16V petrol/gasoline engine. What's yours?)
