I wonder if anyone is still following this thread.

Although an old one.. I'm still interested on it and lately I've been back on programming to parse the commands on my car (Citroen C3).

I'm going slow and do not promise anything, but I think that even that aproach is better than none at all.

Also, some of you have noted that the wiki has been compromised. I'm willing to take over it and clean it up.

Have fun.. and happy driving.

Ton avis ?

Still there.

I'm trying to contact Bruno to see if he has ftp access to the wiki.
If yes, I should be able to revert the changes.

Hi,

I have a 2005 Peugeot 406 that uses VANbus - I wanted to replace the stock head unit with another one so I had to build a VAN interface in order to get the radio remote working with my Pioneer head unit. In the process I have also built a VAN bus monitor that can capture the data in real time without buffering (500kbps serial link back to PC).

Wondering if anyone here is still interested in VAN, I've managed to scrape together all the info I can on the bus messages mostly from this forum thread but there are still lots of gaps! does anyone still have wiki content? I'm going to gather all the info together I have onto my website http://graham.auld.me.uk/projects/vanbus/ unless the wiki makes a re-appearance!
I'm keen to decode as much of the data as possible.

I had a carputer in my old Peugeot 405 that will be installed into the 406 once I get the mechanical considerations organised. The real target is for the carputer to be able to know all about what's going on in the car and pretend to be the sat-nav to put graphics on the multifunctional display!

Cheers

Still intersted in Van monitoring, especially if I can make my carputer respond to the radio joystick/remote and or read data like instant consumption, oil temp, etc.

the hardware part is stalled...

Cool, that's good to hear.

The hardware part is no problem, I'm not familliar with the particular design that was popular in this thread but I have my own design that works nicely.

It would be quite usable for having your carputer react to the radio remote and reading fuel consumption and such.

I'm doing some more writing up this evening, and should get a schematic up on my website for what I have working.

What sort of carputer setup do you have?

In my old car I ran a 5 1/4" single board pc with a 300mhz Athlon processor with USB for GPS, serial button input, hard disk for music. I run a stripped down Fedora distro with a home brew front end in Perl/TK that controlled XMMS. I'm currently trying to work out where I can fit my touchscreen in the 406 neatly and if I can squeze the PC behind the dash rather than wiring from the boot as i did before.

Hi, my carputer is based on a GEODE NX 1750 amd cpu (1.4 Ghz, socket A, 25W) ,an asrock k7s41gx running win2k & a scorpio blue hdd. Speed is adjusted between 700 MHz and 1.4Ghz.

Problem is its integrated video system does 800*480 out of the box but is flakky (directx6.1). However the setup reads Xvids fine even @ 700mhz. As soon as I migrate my main puter from win98se to xp (and replace the gef 4Ti4800se vivo for a 7600gt), I'll use it (ti4800se) in the carputer. I'll be able to hook a rearcam directly to the graphic card video-in.

As I drive a 206 the screen will take the place of the headunit, Carputer in boot.

Still looking for a good indash monitor, and a dc-dc PSU

Cool, that sounds pretty good,

I bought an 8" touch screen from hong kong about four years ago for my setup which used to fit in the dash instead of air vents. Sadly in the 406 the only in dash option is to remove the multifunctional display and heater blower controls so it may just have to sit at the bottom beneath the head unit in front of the gear stick. The real issue is I dont' want the screen to stand out and attract attention! I really miss the flap in the 405 dash that covered up the head unit :-(

I've heard good things about the "M3-ATX" which is a small 12v to ATX power supply with inputs for ignition for booting. My current system uses an EBX form factor board that only requires 5V and 12V so I just built my own switched mode supply with a PIC monitoring the door locks to boot up and shutdown the PC.

About the diagram on your site, thow I'm a total newb in electronic (last exam score :2/20, back in the 20th century) I'm curious to know why you choosed to use a FT232RL for the serial / USB conversion rather than a Prolific PL2303 (it supports win98se & WinMe) ? Availability, price ?

Yup that's the supply i meant!

Re the serial to USB...
I must admit that win98/winMe did not enter my mind, I'm primarily a linux user who has an XP desktop.
I actually did some prototyping with a Prolific PL2303 and the one thing that put me off was I couldn't get the wide range of baud rates I could from the FTDI chip. Mainly though I chose the FTDI chip because of avaliability and I have used them before so I was quite confident of my design working first time. Also the Prolific interface I have has a max232 type level shifter on the PCB that wouldn't run at rates over 380400 kbaud (slew rate limited).

I started out by running at a lower baud rate to the PC, storing up the VAN packet and then sending it out after it finished arriving but you need a reasonable buffer size to keep up with everything on the bus without dropping packets or filtering reception.

The prolific interface would be fine at 380400 baud if the software sent out raw bytes (one per 8 bits bus data) rather than an ASCII byte (one per 4 bits bus data). The output would not be readable in the terminal but it's a one line bit of code in perl to convert that back to ASCII as it arrives at the PC.

I'll try and take some pictures of my interface board in the next day or so.

</ramble>

Hello,

I'm happy to see there's someone still working on this project. I had
to leave months ago due to time constraints.

The rt3wiki seems gonve forever and I was unable to get in touch
with the holder. It was a very valuable source of information, as I
had decoded and documented almost every bit of the most common
packets.

Luckly, I had coded the same info in a format that's used by
a perl script to parse the packets on the fly, so I will be able
to parse it again and generate some documentation

Meanwhile there have been further developments and I'm sorry
that Graham had to rewrite things that were readily available :(

There's also seems to be various sources of information scattered
 on the web.

To avoid loosing it all again I created a project page
at google code and will be uploading my files in the svn. I still
have the perl scripts and the can monitor PIC code.

I would love if you people could jump in so we
can join our efforts. Backups will be taken via SVN this
time ;)

 http://code.google.com/p/van-bus/

Drop me a note and I'll give you access to the svn and the wiki.

Thank you very much for your efforts!

Ahh good stuff. Funnily enough ever since I got my interface for a headunit up on hackaday my website has been very high on google rankings for VAN bus searches. This has resulted in an e-mail every few weeks from people trying to do something with VAN.

Anyhoo - one of those e-mails was somone sending me a backup of the rt3 wiki from before it dissapeared. I've not had time to look over that and augment the info that's already on my website. I too now have perl scripts for parsing bus output but development has stalled somewhat now that I have got the things working in the car that were irritating me. It would be good to move things on and develop things like cd-changer or sat-nav emulators to display data on the display from the likes of mp3 players...

Please e-mail info for access to van***(replace with an at sign coz i don't love spam :-)**graham.auld.me.uk and i'll start getting some of the info and code I have up there at some point

argh! darn this french forum - my rusty french makes navigating somewhat irritating!

I am also active on 406oc.co.uk where there are a couple of folk interested in this too.

I'm glad you jumped on board and that you have a backup!!

The forum can be set to english too  ;)

Feel free to give the folks information about the
new repository.

I've just added my parsing script and the file
with the format of van frames, bit by bit!

http://code.google.com/p/van-bus/s [...] #svn/trunk

I would like to get the wiki in shape again and the build a cdc emulator
for my car, I need aux input.

regarding the display, I do not think it can be used to write data.
IIRC it's the display that reads data from the radio, so you would
need to emulate the whole radio and take the original one
 off the bus.
