HISPANO- SUIZA

hispanosuiza109dr.jpg

Barcelona, Spain. The 14 of July, a group of men of the industry, under the presidence of Damian Mateu and Francisco Seix, founded "La Hispano-Suiza, sociedad anónima, fábrica de automóviles".

The tecnic departament head was the important engineer Mr. Marc Birkigt.

foto1904a.jpgfoto1904b.jpg

Marc Birkigt had designed some years ago the "La Cuadra", in 1900. This cars are said to be the ancestors of the Hispano-Suiza car.

la%20cuadra.jpg

This is the only example that has survived. Is in the Mateu family (founders of La Hispano-Suiza) since 1927.

In 1906, "La Hispano-Suiza" appear for first time in the Paris auto Salon.

An unrestored example of 1907 Hispano-Suiza.

In 1907, La Hispano-Suiza developed the first 6 cylinder car ever produced at Spain, the great 60-75 HP.

"THE FRENCH CONNECTION"

Because of industriial and social problems in Spain, the society go to France, and in 1911, built a sucursal industry at Levallois-Perret.

Little time after that, in 1913, the French factory was installed in Bois-Colombes:

foto1913.jpg

Then , started in France the fabrication of the Alphonse XIII, and the study of an aero engine by Birkigt.

mulhouse_19.jpg

The Alphonse XIII of the Schlumpf collection.

During the Great War, the French factory stopped the production, while the V-8 and V-12 aero engines begun his fantastic career, with more than 20 licenses made for a lot of French, English and German enterprises.

motor avion.jpg

During the Great War, at Spain, (neutral country), appeared the great 32 CV (16 HP) chassis, which was a sucessful luxurious car, produced during very years (included short wheelbase sporting versions , called "Rabassada")

In 1917 was built a new factory at Guadalajara, Spain, for the fabrication of war material nad Hispanos trucks and cars.

The cars there produced were the basis model of Hispano-Suiza (also called Hispano-Guadalajara), the little 8-10 HP model:

104-0450_IMG1.JPG

The truks were basically for the Spanish war depatment, and large buses:

When the Great War ended, La Hispano-Suiza was in a very good financial situation, because of the war commands of the aero engine.

Marc Birkigt, not far from the aero engineering, created by this time his great work: The Hispano-Suiza H6, an imposing car, of graceful and simply lines, and with great advances, like the alu engine, or the servo-assistance brakes in the four wheels. The engine, of Six cylinders, had 6597 c.c and 135 hp.

The presentation was at the 1919 Paris auto Salon, and under the Barcelona "observation", the fabrication started at Bois-Colombes, and not in Barcelona, where the prototypes had been developed.

123_Hispano_Suiza_H6_Duvivier_Tourer.jpg

This is the first H-6 produced (not prototype), which was sold to Spanish King Alphonse XIII (as many other hispanos).

Hispano-Suiza23_X4650.jpg

106-0697_IMG1.JPG

106-0698_IMG.JPG

The first H-6s produced had a very high wheels, which will be changed in the near years of production.

Was in this early post-war years, with the creation of the H-6 (the most advanced car of the world in that moment), when La Hispano-Suiza started to use his famous symbol, "la cigogne", bacause of the war triumphs in the air battles during the war.

:non:

About this topic, the mentioned "D 49" isnt´t a correct denomination / name for this car...

The correct denomination is "T-49" ( 3,8 liter engine) , the smaller version of the H-6, and built only at the Barcelona factory,

thinking in the Spanish Marked, and never saled at the French market..

This model appeared in 1922, in chassis wihtout body, or bodied in the Hispano-Suiza factory, like this one :

The 3, 8 liter engine, based on the H-6 :

The T-49 was made from 1922 to the mid 30s:

About the V12, possibly were developed after the war,....

About the H-6..

In 1923 in the Boulogne race, for cars of more than 4,5 litres, the Hispano-Suiza reached the 1 place (drived by Garnier), and the 2 place (drived by Boyriven)...

Also raced the famous sportman André Dubonnet in the first coup "Georges Boillot", in Boulogne. , who ordered one of this "racer" chassis of H-6, of short long wheelbase and ligth chassis, for his personal use.

After that, he bodied this car with an sporty wood frame, and raced it many times, like the Targa-Florio in Italy.

The Hispano-Suiza started tho recive many orders of many sportmans to buy the "light" chassis (30 cm less than the normal chassis, and axles of 3.390 m), and this light racing chassis of the H-6 was made in no large number (perhaps only 9), and was called the type "Boulogne".

The engine of this Boulogne type were the same that the H6B but fifted with a diferent "arbre" (distribution)

and pistons 2 mm higher.

http://www.hispano-suiza-sa.com/spip.php?article1&lang=fr

http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hispano-Suiza

http://www.lahispano-suiza.com/historia/index.htm

Avec un club espagnol...

http://www.lahispano-suiza.com/clubhispanosuiza/english/index.htm

http://www.autovirtual-museum.com/hispsomm.htm

Remarque.

http://site.voila.fr/patrimoineversoix2/page1.html

http://www.pionnair-ge.com/spip1/spip.php?article153

http://site.voila.fr/patrimoineversoix5/page2.html

The problem started after the Great War, when the French government started to demand high taxes to the foreign societies in France.

Hispano-Suiza, after a large international process, was stablished (under the head of Birkigt, Lacoste, etc) as "Societé automobile Française" but not independient at all.

For example, the financial cuestion of the company was allways studied at Barcelona, the K-6 was originally developed for the Spanish Market (and a little number of them were made at Barcelona), the T-56 and T-56 Bis were made at Barcelona (k-6 and t-56 were Birkigt projects)..and many other Hispanos, from 1934, were developed without the supervision of Birkigt, only by Spanish projectist, as were the T-60 or T-60 RL models, or te fabulous T-69 truck.... like many other cuestions.

The Hispano-Suiza H6 made in Skoda were also called "Skoda-Hispano-suiza 25/100", and had few differences from the original Hispano car. The "simbols" changed; First, only the original "hispano suiza" inscription; after, the same but with an stylised "Skoda" inscription, and after, the wings symbol was changed for the circular "Skoda" inscription.

Only a few of them were made (about 150, sans certitude), and are only preserved about 10.
