Released and effective May 11, 2004, Porsche has shown the first pictures of its latest 911. Launched worldwide in July, it’s clear to see that this latest generation (Type 997) is more evolution than revolution building on the established 911 design cues that have made the car so popular with supercar buyers. The most obvious design change is the adoption of a wider track, for the first time the 911 is available with 19” alloy wheels. Other features of the evolutionary styling include the return to circular headlamps, more prominent bumpers and wheel arches, striking dual arm wing mirrors and a more aerodynamic rear spoiler.
The new 911 should be an even friendlier drive too, with new a new active suspension system. Called Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM), in the normal position it provides a sporty comfortable balance. Change it to sport, however, and the suspension becomes firmer giving more agility for enthusiastic driving. PASM is standard on the Carrera S and optional on the Carrera. Other options include a sports handling package, which lowers the body by 20 mm and is also fitted with a limited-slip differential.
Two new models will be available at launch: the Carrera fitted with a 325 bhp, 3.6 liter six-cylinder gasoline ‘boxer’ engine, and the 911 Carrera S, powered by a newly-developed 3.8 liter gasoline engine with 355 bhp. Both of the units are mated to new six-speed manual box. The new 3.8 liter accelerates from 0-62 mph in 4.8 seconds and has a torque figure of 400 Nm (295 lb ft). The Carrera does the 0-62 mph dash in an equally impressive five seconds, with the top speed being 177 mph and 182 mph respectively.
